Born in the Gila Wilderness of Southern New Mexico in 1958, singer/songwriter Cole Mitchell began his trajectory as a curator of stories. At first these tales were of the ranching life’s trials, tribulations, and conquests told from horseback on the trail at night around the fire. After relocating to Northern Alabama and coming of age in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War he set his focus on Nashville in his mid-teens, this is where the art really began. The stories now took on a different hue for they were collected from the new places and people he was seeing and meeting. Touring for a stint with a band out of Music City proved to be an education that soon launched a career and the stories took the form of song.

Years later back in New Mexico, the family reunited in the big ranch country and then crossed the Badlands and settled in the Rio Grande Valley. His grandmother retired from teaching art and the family opened a bar in Cuchillo, New Mexico. Many of her paintings have been incorporated into his work as album art, while always writing Cole’s performance entities have varied over the years, ranging from front man of several bands, most notably Saddlesores, the raucous alt-country outfit which kept him busy from 1990 to 2005. Stepping on to the singer/songwriter path, the last ten years have been the most productive of his career with six albums and more on the horizon, several film and television placements, and other nods for his writing skills.

Mr. Mitchell has been plagued with health issues including blindness, which overtook him in 1992 and kidney transplants beginning in 1994. Down time during the healing process prompted an experiment in long form writing both fiction and memoir opening up new venues for this life long storyteller.
